I enjoyed Superman Returns. I think it gets a bad rap. It is certainly better, IMO, than Man of Steel. At least it gets the characters right. The plot is a bit of a rehash, and I wasn't a huge fan of Lois' new man and child. But on the whole I think it was pretty good.

I actually really liked Lois' fiance, and I thought they did a pretty good job with her kid (it could've been so much worse). And, I never saw the original Superman so it didn't feel derivative to me.

I saw MoS awhile after everyone had seen it, so I was aware of the issues beforehand. Given that, I was pleased that it was at least a little better than I thought it would be. But, Grim!Superman is not my jam. I really hated what they did to his dad. I grew up on Superman from the 90s when Jonathan was this nice little old man. Having such a mean Jonathan who went out like a chump was so stupid.

There wasn't anything of Clark Kent in MoS. Clark Kent is optimistic and hopeful. He believes in humanity. He's the Steve Rogers of DC. People said that Steve was a boring character but look how popular he is now. You can be idealistic and interesting.

The thing that disappoints me the most is that I am a DC girl so seeing the direction the WB is going in for the films just sucks. I'm hoping Suicide Squad is fun and crazy, though I'm not a fan of villains. I'm hoping the success with Deadpool will show that people want fun.

That lack of Clark and of optimism as well as the Jonathan Kent issues were what ruined it for me. Most people who don't like it seem to focus on him killing Zod. That wasn't as much of an issue for me. What bothered me was the whole tone. Superman has always been an optimistic character, even in the darkest of his comics.

And while there are different versions of him, my favorites are always the one where Clark is the real man and Superman the mask. And the thing is, he wants to be a hero. He wants to help people. That's essential to who he is. And he cares about Metropolis. He's this superpowered character. He could be doing really big things (and he often does). but he also focuses on the little things in the city he loves and for the people he loves. That's essential to who he is.

I can see how MOS could be seen as a good movie. But it just doesn't understand Superman. At all.
