[FMA: Brotherhood, Solf J. Kimblee]

Kimblee honestly scared the living shit out of me. The way he took absolute joy in murdering civilians during the war was very chilling. I've hated few characters the way I hated him.

I've only seen the first anime but yeah, that guy sucked.

Didn't know he had a first name lol. Or that Kimblee wasn't his first name.

Not starting a FMA03 vs FMAB debate, but Kimblee of the original anime and Brotherhood Kimblee are very different characters. Personality, abilities. They were both destructive forces in the war, and both went to prison, but that's pretty much it.

The man grated on my nerves and I sure as hell wouldn't want to be within a continent of him, but I do admit to a certain fascination with his bizarre sense of honour (the whole 'have whatever principles you like, however horrifying, but once you have them damn well stick to them' thing), and to give him his due he went out in fucking style. To the relief of everyone in range, in-universe and out, but hot damn he did it classy.

Sometimes I feel like the only one who found Kimblee sympathetic. Sure, he's probably a sociopath, but he does have standards, and he can recognize and support virtuous people in his own twisted way (like when he kills the civilians Armstrong refused to fire on, then makes sure Armstrong doesn't get in trouble, because even though he obeys his orders, he respects Armstrong's courage in disobeying.)

lots o spoilers

I feel like Kimblee's character is often misinterpreted. Or at least I wonder if this is the case. He is admittedly one of my top three favorite characters from Brotherhood, but I completely understand why someone would dislike him. Kimblee is, after all, a bad guy. But my favorite sort of psychopath character, the sort of psychopath who just is. He's evil by default, not through any life circumstances aside from his birth. He didn't have a choice in the matter, and that doesn't particularly bother him. Kimblee revels in death and murder as byproducts of the chaos he gets to unleash- he finds life to be very dull and not worth living without destruction. He thinks explosions and catastrophes, mass death and wanton human depravity are fascinating. Before he could decimate entire city blocks just by bringing his hands together, he was living in boredom and apathy. He excelled through the military simply so he could gain access to the sort of power a state alchemist position would afford him. Kimblee actually has a fair amount of integrity, despite his lacking moral compass. He plays by the rules. He needs permission to be horrible, because that's how it's done. He's not some slobbering maniac, because (fitting as to how he ends up) Kimblee has his pride. When the war ends, Kimblee all but surrenders himself to solitary confinement. His license to kill, the war in Ishval, is over. So he blows up a bunch of Amestris higher-ups when they ask for the philosopher's stone back and then strolls into custody. If there's no war, there's no place for him. It's not until years later when he's been pardoned (or, I dunno, borrowed from jail) by the military and sent on a fetch mission that he gets to make with the mayhem again. And even then, most of his time on the outside is spent carefully planning his movements, commanding a search team and essentially keeping it in his pants until he knows it's the permitted and proper course of action. He's a really sinister guy, but in such a specific way. He has standards.

Sorry for the book length going-on. While she respects why I think he's so cool, my fiancee actually really dislikes Kimblee, he scares her the way natural disaster films with high human death tolls scare her. He's such a formidable character, like genuinely dangerous in ways other FMA:B characters can't touch. I am down with not being down with Kimblee. But I think it's awesome that Kimblee is polite and patient and often downright accommodating. His one real beef is with Scar, and that's only a fish that got away sort of preoccupation. And when Pride fucking eats him, he's able to maintain his soul autonomy because the sound of everyone screaming in agony is like music to his ears. And then he saves the day (or at least the battle) because as someone with so much personal pride, he finds it detestable that the homunculus Pride is such a secret hypocrite.

tl:dr I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't quite understand coming out of Brotherhood (or the manga) and thinking Kimblee's worse that any of the other big bads, or even in the same category. So many of the real bastards of the series were otherwise normal human beings who went dark side out of greed and powerlust. Like everyone responsible for starting the war to begin with. Kimblee is just a monster and he can't help that. I wouldn't say he's sympathetic, but at least he has standards. I'd feel safer locked in a room with Kimblee than virtually any other villain of FMA:B. And I think he's at least a neat character.

Well in the way you describe, Kimblee is like a personification of war itself. Totally vile and inhumane but only when given permission to be from the state.

The other big bads weren't human tho, Kimblee was human without the humanity.

NAYRT I really agree with the sentiment that he's "human without the humanity" and that, to me, is what makes him such a frightening, polarizing character. He's not some crazy, ruthless, stereotype of a villain. He's a complex character and that makes him read as more realistic than the other bad guys. I don't feel like I could run into Pride on the street in real life, but I do feel like I could run into Kimblee.

I hate this character because I never really saw the point of him + have gratuitously ignored his existence in my own fic, but I like this interpretation. Thank you for laying it out so thoughtfully.
