I wouldn't have made it through my childhood without his music. It was more than comfort. It formed me. As years passed, I consumed the same art he consumed, walk the same streets he walked, spoke his name like a word of power.
Over the past year I finally started recovering from years of abuse and trauma. For months I kept thinking about writing him a letter to thank him. But I kept putting it off. I kept telling myself, "He doesn't need or want your thanks."
I wish I had realized sooner that thanking him was something I needed for myself.
