I think she had issues with putting her body through pregnancy and was worried her career was gonna have to take a backseat because she thought she'd have to be a stay at home mom. She did talk to Howard about how he'd be the stay at home parent though. Oh, and she had to help raise her siblings and that seemed to sour her on having kids of her own.

Thanks for the details, anon. I see more why OP was annoyed, though I also respect that women can change their minds about kids...

Not op or ayrt.

With a thing like this it's not so much that women, who say they don't want kids, can change their minds - it's that it is expected of them to do so.

I'm 38 and I still get the "you'll change your mind" bs. That's when I tell them that I already did. Into not wanting them, that is.

ayrt

I get why that could be frustrating to people who really don't want kids (and don't like being expected to change their minds), but imo Bernadette never struck me as someone who really really really never wanted to have kids ever. (But ugh, I sympathize with your having to deal with that bs)

My "read" of that scene was not that they mutually decided to have children in the future because Howard would be a stay-at-home parent, but that she was turning the tables on him and showing him how it felt to have others just assume you'd quit the job you worked hard for an enjoy because you had the lower income (the paradigm is already flipped for them, it's a running joke that she makes so much more than him). Again, for me the take away was not "yes, we will have kids in the future" so much as Howard going "wait a minute ... that's not how I pictured it in my head."
