I miss good fic in Transformers fandom. Is there even a kink meme anymore? Am I looking in the wrong places? It seems all AO3 is anymore are un-betaed drabbles and those awful compilation multi-chapter fics of different pairings that the author wrote on tumblr in responses to ask-requests that are all a paragraph in length.

Anymore? That is all AO3 ever was on account of asking someone to beta was oppression.

Say it isn't so!! I know good fics exist, I've read them! I'm just so tired of wading through 3k word PWPs, dear god!!

Searching for good fic on AO3 is an exercise in futility. It was set up by people who kept getting told their writing wasn't up to spec for FF.net. These are writers who were not good enough to be able to post in the Pit of Voles! That tells you all you need to know.

Wow, I actually had no idea about that. I always thought that AO3 was a step up from FF.net. I never used to read fanfic, so I recall FF.net from my days as a kid, looking up bad lemons about Digimon characters and the such, so I figured it was rampant with badfic.

Do people still post fic to FF.net?

They're full of shit. For one thing, who goes around telling people they're not up to spec over at the Pit? I've been there for over a decade and never gotten that treatment.

Every so often the pit goes through a phase where they have to enforce their rules, one of those rules is writing competence and plot coherency. AO3 (Archive Of Our Own) was set up by people who got caught up and kicked out during one of those sweeps. I'm sorry you've fallen through the cracks, but if you give me your FF screen name I'll be sure and report you next time they go through it.

...for the gullible, this is straight-up wrong. AO3 originated from something that happened on Livejournal called Strikethrough, which was largely about banning various things that could maybe perhaps be construed as child porn if you were really stupid. (Groups affected included child sexual abuse survivor support groups and groups dedicated to lolita fashion, for perspective.) FFN never, ever enforces the "must be reasonably well-written" rules, and they never have.

I'm sorry, but you are the one that is lying. I was around when the founders of Archive Of Our Own (AO3) was kicked off FF.net and it was indeed for failure to adhere to writing standards. They responded to the request they up their written standards by screaming about social justice and homophobia, then then that failed to get their FF.net accounts reinstated they developed AO3. ~~With hookers and blackjack~~

As I recall the same group that precipitated the LJ thing also protested and attacked Fanfiction.net at around the same time. It sounds like you two both have a half of the whole there. Occams razor at work. Some coming from LJ and some from Fanfiction.net.

I can testify that Fanfiction.net doesn't uphold its rules very often, especially on the no crossovers in the main categories, but it does do periods of enforcement at times. They were doing so when AO3.org got set up.

Yes, but was the thing they called the AO3 founders on really terrible writing? Because that is what that anon is asserting. I've read Astolat's published novels. They're not the best thing I've ever read, but certainly anyone who was also producing that would be able to produce work good enough to stay on FFN.

What kind of stuff do you like, and what pairings?

I like G1, and IDW continuity, and my tastes are pretty broad! I prefer explicit fics, but if a fic is really good I'll read it even if there's no smut. PWPs are okay, but only if they're a genuinely interesting character interaction, and not just two mechs mindlessly fucking.

I can get into any pairings, especially when it comes to G1, but for IDW I don't really like Drift with Ratchet, Perceptor, or Wing, and I hate Rodimus/Ultra Mags.

Kinks, I'll read anything if it's well-written.

That knocked out most of what I read :o I feel like everything else I've read is by a big enough name that you'd already know of it if you were interested, or is too fucked up to rec without knowing someone's into it (like Bob/Sunstreaker).

Chaoswolf12's Cycle Heats Up, Get Burned is G1-ish Prowl/Skywarp longfic.

Prowl starts a heat cycle, and makes plans to take care of it. But when things start to spiral out of his control, they really do, and he ends up with a situation he'd never have been able to predict.

Clothesbeam's A Sparkeater By Any Other Name is Drift/Rodimus, and while the premise (yandere!Drift)might make it too out there/character divergent to be considered good by some, I liked it.

Vir.Rabbit.D: The Decepticons are infected with a virus which causes them to go into an endless heat cycle, and the only cure is a good, hard frag. Unfortunately, the virus has locked away their ability to frag themselves, so what's a ship full of desperate mechs to do? Call their enemies for relief, of course.

Okay, some recs. These are kind of prejudiced - I have fairly strong opinions on a lot of stuff in this fandom.

Domestic Electronics, by bibliotecaria-d. Canon: MTMTE-ish. Gen, fairly fluffy, set in an AU where they're household pets/appliances (they're tiny cuddly robots, but they transform into blenders and so on) and a human named Joe adopts some of them. It's about the DJD, if that's a problem. I would strongly advise you against any of the author's other stuff, but that's possibly an issue with me personally.

Foundlings, by ladydragon76. Canon: cartoon G1. First thing you should know: this is mistagged and actually contains no twincest. The primary relationship is command trine OT3. They find and adopt baby Sideswipe and Sunstreaker, and raise them as their own. It's mostly set pre-war. It is also fairly fluffy, although there's a few chapters set during the war that are a lot darker. The rest of her stuff is also pretty good.

Marry Me, by dracoqueen22. Canon: MTMTE. Ultra Magnus/Swerve, fake relationship becomes real; there's also a previously unrequited crush from Swerve's side. I don't agree with its characterization of Magnus at some points, but it's cute, it handles most of its other stuff well, and it has an actual interesting plot.

The Gentleman's Handbook, by SilentP. Canon: cartoon G1. Hound/Mirage, friends to lovers; also has an actual plot. Fairly fluffy, but in a way that still manages to keep some dramatic tension, if that makes sense.

This search should be somewhat helpful - it's all the G1 fic (the entire sub-franchise, so also including a bunch of other stuff, but it's so unpopular I can't imagine you'll have trouble with it clogging up the tag), with the pairings you don't like filtered out, sorted by kudos. My recs up there are basically the best of the fics I recognized when I ran that search, summarized.

I second Dracoqueen22's Marry Me, and all of her fic really. Oubliette is another of hers I remember liking. I would've recced it to fic-needing nonny myself but I figured they had already read it.
