I'm a person that if I'm in a new city or town, I want to check out the grocery store. Just to see what is sold there, different items in different regions and such. Even if it's the same state, I like to see what is sold because I don't have that same grocery store near me.

Tell me: what would be the best item to get in your local grocery store? Anywhere!

Our local grocery store is a fairly upmarket supermarket. It has delicious chocolate dipped flapjack, organic noodles and miso soup.

uh well my favorite ramen flavor disappeared like five years ago, only for me to move recently and find out it had become regional. so I'm all over that shit.

I love looking in local grocery stores, too! Especially if I'm in another country where almost everything is new to me. The best items here? Hmmmm. There's a local brand of potato chips fried in peanut oil that are very tasty, lots of microbreweries...

Bibimbab and spicy soba from the cafe that's part of an Korean food specialty store near me. In the summer they also do pretty elaborate shaved ice.

When I lived on the Central Coast, absolutely the wine aisle. So many great local wines! Checking out the beers too, usually a few microbreweries amongst the national chains.

Knowing a little about the demographics of the area might influence your search of the ethnic foods aisles a bit. The Ralphs to the north of me is the place to go for Jewish staples/biggest Passover selection. The market to the south of me is the place to go for Filipino and Korean stuff, as that area has a higher Asian population than up here. Every grocery store here has plenty of Mexican favorites.

From Coles: Well my long-time regular store keeps biltong in the deli section, but I haven't been buying it of late as I have gone off it for now.

I mentioned this in the favourite stores thread - I have a fondness for the Asian supermarkets in the Brisbane CBD because they seem to be more Korean and keep Yuja-cha, a marmalade-like product that can be mixed into hot water to make a citrus tea. They also have seaweed snacks that I have grown fond of, and it's far cheaper to pick up a five-pack of noodles from them than have to pay a lot more for single packets at Coles.

The Piggly Wiggly in my neighborhood has a lot of Middle eastern stuff. The other big box grocery is nice but doesn't stand out. The little Italian market is where you go for oil cured olives. The co-op has a lot of great stuff they make, like cupcakes and spreads, and has an awesome bulk foods section.

I will be sad if I ever have to leave San Diego, because I grew up eating San Diego Soy Dairy tofu. Also, I wish fresh mangosteen was easier to find here. There's a bread company, Sadie Rose, that used to sell at a farmer's market and now only sells to wholesale supermarkets, and none of them carry the breads I got hooked on from the farmer's market booth. Oh well.
