nice try. I'd be happy, as would all reasonable people, if it were presented, with explanatory introductory material, as a product of its time. Children, not being stupid, will understand if the context is made clear.

Do people really need to be told that a book written in a different century has people whose attitudes differed from contemporary thinking. Because I got to tell you, and maybe it's because I'm old and standards of education have changed in the last half century, that is a default assumption I go in with.

[nayrt] you'd by fucking amazed.
only yesterday i was watching people complain about a scene in bend it like beckham that they thought was racist wanted to point at and laugh about 'white people who think they're opressed', when oddly enough none of these teenage americans knew jack fucking shit about late nineties britain; and didn't seem to care that much that the movie was written, directed and produced by Gurinder Chadha (who, you might be able to deduce from the name, is not white).

Sometimes people grow up sheltered and ignorant. They don't know anything about history or how attitudes differed, really. It's unfortunate when this happens, but it's not uncommon.

Somehow I doubt the target audience, and everyone else would feel condesended to. I know I do every time Whoppie Goldberg tells me it's okay to enjoy the Warner Brothers cartoons I grew up with. I'm well aware that some of them are WW2 propaganda. The references to Hitler and Tojo were dead giveaways.

Oops! Lost some words there. Meant to say the people who needed to know would skip the educational preface.
