I think it's only an issue when a kid is reading material that's a little too complicated for them and/or the parents aren't engaging in discussion about the reading material.

I suppose. I don't remember discussing anything I was reading with my parents other than when we would talk about stuff we shared (both reading the same mystery writer) or recommending something.

Then I'd hazard a guess that the material wasn't too complicated for you. I don't recall having any in depth discussions of the book with my parents either, but even as a kid I was savvy enough to understand the issues at play even if I didn't know everything about the history of British colonialism. Then again, I'm a POC who grew up in a predominantly white culture. I wouldn't assume that every kid would be able to grasp the nuances of Mary's relationships with the Indian servants of her household, or why her attitudes were racist.
