I often read books that challenge me. I don't demand that their contents are altered to suit my sensibilities. What would be the point of that?

Why does your personal discomfort trump the author's right to have her work represented accurately? Like most keen readers, I encounter material that I sometimes find uncomfortable, challenging and distressing. If I find it too much, I can always stop, read something else, and come back later if I want. So can you.

Likewise, why not read one of the thousands of other books that don't contain this material? Who are you to have texts altered for your convenience and comfort? Or write your own text that only contains what you like. This notion that you somehow have a right to never encounter anything discomfiting is infantile.
