You'd be surprised. In the rural town I grew up in, there were virtually no non-whites. My only exposure to black American culture growing up was from the rap and hip-hop that the farm kids listened to, and by the time it reached me it had been watered down to the worst stereotypes. It was pretty easy to write black culture off entirely along with rednecks and country music.

I'm just thankful I got out of there and ended up somewhere a little more diverse.

Uhhhh what are you talking about? I'm talking about media depictions, like in the secret. Call the media racist all you like, I don't care.

Edit: Plus, I've already made it clear that in the part of Canada where I grew up there were like five black people in the entire city. Half the population was South Asian, but zero black people. All the exposure I ever got was media, and I challenge you to think of a 90's depiction of black people that wasn't some thug gangsta bullshit.
