53. Hang on, they are books about overcoming oppression and orthodoxy. Just because it so happens that the oppressive authority in the books is an organised religion doesn't mean that the idea can't be extended.

I think what they're going towards is the fact that Philip Pullman can be an absolute ass about organized religion in real life. As in, apparently thinks the church in this world is as evil as that in Lyra's - least, that's the impression I've got from the interviews I've read.

I don't know, I've read quite a few interviews and while he obviously doesn't like organised religion, I've never gotten the impression that he was being an ass about it.

I disagree with Pullman's stance on the Narnia books, but his comments don't make me like Narnia or HDM any less.

And I guess that shows two people can read things entirely differently.

Hey, never said I didn't like the books... they're just a bit hard to read now that I know what they were "supposed to" be read as.

(Anonymous) 2008-03-07 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, perhaps, although I would be interested in what interviews you've read which gave you that impression.

I'm not sure I would agree that there is only one way a book can be read or should be read. What does Pullman say on how they are supposed to be read?

Hmm, here's a quote from his own website (http://www.philip-pullman.com/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=118):

"Finally: is HDM anti-religious, or isn't it? Religion is something that human beings do, and the story is on the side of humanity... As for what it's against - the story is against those who pervert and misuse religion, or any other kind of doctrine with a holy book and a priesthood and an apparatus of power that wields unchallengeable authority, in order to dominate and suppress human freedoms."

Well, I don't know about anyone else but that does sound reasonable to me...

A-actually I hadn't heard that one, it makes me feel a bit better about the books, thank you ♥
