3. Most of the people I know who read Good Omens keep talking about how incredibly slashy it is and all the Crowley/Aziraphale subtext, but I never saw it. Not at all.

Newt/Anathema, though, I was behind from the start. =3

53. TY, Yes. I figured out the whole anti-all-religion aspect pretty early on, but even now I still try to recapture the fantasy adventure magic of the first two books every time I read them. Amber Spyglass, though, I've never really felt the urge to pick up a second time. I like my kid fantasy books fun and not beating me over the head with anti-faith allegories.

I had the same reaction when I found out that Chronicles of Narnia were Christian allegories, actually - a vague sense of "Really? What, really? Eeeehhh." When I was in second grade, they were just fun.

Really, for me, I draw from pretty much every religion I come across to assemble my own faith, so reading books that bash any specific form of faith-having still feels like something of an attack on my amorphous little 1-person religion. Why can't we all just get along?

Spyglass was a huge letdown for me, because it was so damn heavy-handed. METAPHOR IS A GOOD THING, PEOPLE. LOVE IT.

Heavy handed religion? Watch New Doctor Who - that's how to do it wrong, IMHO.

[identity profile] lady-ganesh.livejournal.com 2008-03-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep that in mind.

I know, right? Pretty much no magic to it at all.

Needed moar armored bears, dammit.

There's damn little in life that wouldn't be improved by armored bears.
