44 and 53

44. Valant is freaking awesome. I don't write yaoi or het, but I want to write crazy love-circle fic with Valant, Zak, and Thalassa.

53. Kind of the exact opposite of the Chronicles of Narnia, isn't it? Once you see the religious message in Narnia, it ruins the fantasy. Once you see the anti-religious message in HDM, it ruins the fantasy.

Of course that's not true for everyone, and if you agree with one or the other message it probably enhances the story. It just leaves the rest of us out in the cold.

I'm much closer to HDM's mindset than probably any other, and it was still too much for me.

53. So agree with you. But would you say HDM is more anti-religious or anti-spiritual?

Well, it's been ages since I read the books, but from what I recall it seemed more anti-religious. The part where the people were emerging into the open air and dissolving into the ether, sort of becoming part of everything, seemed very spiritual to me, at the time at least.

I completely agree with you on 53. (Funny thing is, though, that despite the fact that I'm an atheist with a dislike for organized religion, Narnia bothers me less, on the whole, than HDM does. Maybe it's just because Lewis was, as far as I know, not as much of a jerk about it as Pullman is?)

I think Lewis made some pretty strong Christian statements, but he at least once stated that Narnia wasn't intended as a Christian allegory (which seems kind of like BS to me, but it does seem better than Pullman's method). I'm less than informed, though, so don't take my word for it.

I lean the other way a bit; I can handle HDM better than Narnia. But the authors' views don't have as much weight with me, I guess -- and on the first readthrough when I was a kid, there was something that bothered me about the Narnia books. Add that to what I said above about HDM having spiritual elements, and based on the writing alone HDM sits a bit better with me. But prolonged exposure to Pullman's raving on the subject would probably drum the anti-religious aspect in so deep that I couldn't enjoy the books anymore.
