(Anonymous) 2008-03-07 02:06 am (UTC)(link)But then I started hearing about how Pullman had written them to be the anti-Narnia and he wanted children to have an atheist equivalent of Narnia because religion was eeeevil or something and. It made me sad precisely because I'd liked the books so much. :(

And I did it mostly because ALL Christianity looked like Pullman's version of it to me.
I looked at the Church and I saw evil and oppression and idiotic dogma. There was nothing good there...but somehow, I still wanted to try to understand strongly religious people. I mean, it's not like there's anything bad about "love thy neighbor" and "turn the other cheek", right? How is it that so many religious people were so hateful and mean then?
Heh. I'm a bit wiser now. As one of the R. Niebuhr's said, religion is a good thing for good people and a bad thing for bad people. It's that simple.
I now find it sad when obviously intelligent people bash religion and say that it's a delusion or that it poisons everything. That's such a limited point of view. And I think that's why I like His Dark Materials; they read more to me as a critique of oppressive fanaticism than religion in general.
But I always saw the social commentary intended by the books. I can't say that I ever just read them as fantasy. (Arguably, I never read anything on a face-value level. All the best works of art challenge the world and our place in it.)
