It's a combo of things. A big one, I would say, is that she outdoes so many main characters.

1. The fact that she gets the drop on Finn who is a trained soldier since childhood
2. The fact that she, a starving scavenger since the age of 5, is so kind-hearted that she's willing to forgo food for a droid she just met
3. The fact that she flies the Millennium Falcon like a pro despite admitting to Finn that's she never flown it before-that it hasn't flow in years.
4. She figures out what's wrong with the Falcon faster than Han Solo of all people despite never having flown it before
5. Anakin/Luke's lightsaber calls out to her
6. She's never fired a blaster before and the first time she uses it, after taking off the safety, immediately hits two stormtroopers
7. When Kylo Ren tries to mind read her, she turns his attack back on him and leaves him shaken, figuring out that he's afraid of never being as strong as Vader. And there's no killing Han to excuse this.
8. She figures out how to use a mind trick by herself.
9. She manages to defeat Kylo Ren. Sure he was injured, but so was she. Kylo had just knocked her out against a tree and she has no training. At least, nothing since age 5. The script flat out says she could have killed him. Why are we supposed to see Kylo Ren as a threat to her again?

Wait, so as a starving scavenger from the age of 5, she should be so tough and ruthless that she wouldn't be nice to a droid, but also as a starving scavenger (with a melee weapon) from the age of 5, her skills with a melee weapon are unbelievable?

Okay. I see.

She can be a good fighter, but better than a guy who has been trained as a soldier since childhood (Finn)? Nope. I don't buy it at all.

You can learn a lot on your own. But given that Rey would have been worried about where her next meal was coming from I don't for a second believe that she would ever get the drop on Finn who was, after all, a trained soldier.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-23 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
A trained soldier terrified out of his mind, dehydrated, without armor or weapons or backup (when he's trained to fight with all three), and completely caught off-guard. Yeah, totally unbelievable.

Plus, what happened to all of those "stormtroopers are terrible shots" jokes when it's Rey fighting them?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-23 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because it grinds my gears that Finn gets treated as an incompetent joke?

And also consider that Finn isn't suffering from prolonged malnutrition the way the film shows Rey is - she never gets enough to eat.

The fact that she consistently defeats people with more training and experience than her is the problem.

There's no way I buy that she knows more about the Falcon than Han when she's never flown it before.

There's no way I buy her turning Kylo Ren's mind probe against him.

There's no way I buy her magically figuring out how to do a mind trick.

Also, Rey is explicitly, in TFA, pointed out to have never used a blaster before but is still a crack shot. Every other Star Wars character that gets a ranged weapon has at least some training/practice to justify their shooting skill.

When did I say Finn was a joke? I said all stormtroopers were. He's actually the first plot-relevant one and he's rather badass at it. I love him. I'm just saying it's not out of the blue that he could be beat in one fight, in this circumstance in particular.

-shrug- I buy all of that because main characters have been pulling that kind of shit since the dawn of time. It's expected. The only difference is that male character rarely have to be able to JUSTIFY main character skills, whereas a girl needs a reason for every single skill she has or it's unrealistic.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-23 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Sorry. I agree that there are tons of male characters that are overskilled (see basically every video game protagonist ever).

But the other Star Wars protagonists had skills that, while they set them apart, were never highlighted at the expense of other main characters.

Anakin's piloting ability and mechanical skill never required putting down Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon or Padmé.

Luke was a great pilot and a good shot but he never showed up Han or Leia.

Meanwhile, Rey kicks Finn's ass, kicks Kylo Ren's ass, knows more about the Falcon than Solo (seriously, that's like Luke knowing more about the Force than Obi-Wan) and is beloved by everyone she meets.

Han and Chewie hardly took an instant liking to Luke. And Obi-Wan and the Jedi Council certainly didn't love Anakin when they first met.

knows more about the Falcon than Solo

Ugh, stop saying that, no she doesn't. She literally only knows about a) basic ship maintenance and b) the upgrades made that Han Solo wasn't present for. All the impressive Falcon-related things are still done by Solo once he's on-board.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-23 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
+1

She knows parts because she has been scavenging for useful parts all her life.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-23 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
It's still ridiculous because she explicitly says that she hasn't flown it before and the Falcon belongs to someone else. It's not some random ship that no one cares about that she could meddle with - it has another owner.

Also, way to ignore literally every other point I made. One or two things would be forgivable, but the combination is what makes Rey a Sue.

Combine that with a severe lack of character flaws and it's even worse.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-23 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, I'll bite. I'm getting so tired of the "Rey is a Mary Sue" from people who have no idea what a mary sue is. Anyway, to answer.

1. Finn has been wandering the desert for who knows how many hours. Hence, he's rather fatigued/ probably sunstroked etc. He mentioned that the first battle he fought in, was the first one that we saw on screen ie; the one he totally freaked out in (with good reason tbh) and he was more than a little freaked out by the crazy looking woman running after him, after having just fought a bunch of men and won (and don't get me started on that. She's a woman who'se had to survive by herself- of course she's taught herself how to defend herself)

2. Er she didn't 'forgo food' as such, she just decided not to take the multiple amounts she was offered for the droid (and she was tempted, for a moment- but ultimately decided not to take it after all and just the amount that she was offered for the parts)

3. She didn't 'fly it like a pro'. Did you even watch that bit of the film? She kept flying it into the ground! She was very shaky to begin with. Plus, like Finn, she kept having to tell herself 'you can do this you can do this' hence she was lacking in confidence.

4. This has been mentioned below. The falcon had been modified since Han had flown it.

5. How does this make her a Mary Sue? It only means that she is probably a Skywalker, or connected to it, in some way.

6. Again, rewatch that scene. She actually misses the first shot.

7. and 8. There could be a lot of reasons why she is so strong with the Force. I'm sure they will be explained in the next two films. Again, this does not make her a Mary Sue. Also, Kylo Ren was powerful but he was also a very damaged, confused character. I would argue that her breaking through his mind read has as much to do with him, as with her. We also don't know the connection that he has with her. Perhaps he is weakened around her for other reasons than simply that she is good with the force. Could they be half-siblings or cousins? Hm...

9. Kylo Ren wasn't just 'injured'. He had been hit with a blaster that had been shown throughout the film to be so powerful that it blew stormtroopers away quite literally! I personally found it amazing that he was able to even fight! So yes, he was severely injured, perhaps even dying and was clearly upset/not thinking straight after killing his own father. Rather than thinking about what a so-called 'Mary Sue' Rey is, in that scene, I think how crazy it is that Kylo Ren is still able to fight after everything that has happened to him.

Actually, now that i've gone through this list, I've realised that marking Rey as a Mary Sue is a very limiting way to view the film.
