For instance, my pre-Kindergarten teacher couldn't figure out that I came from a cultural background where I wasn't used to the concept of rhetorical questions.

This! My spouse is South Asian and I'm American. I used to tease him because he didn't know what metaphors were until I had to explain the concept to him. I feel horrible about it now, but you're right about your point.
