(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 12:23 am (UTC)(link)I also like the fashion, though I do think the women's fashion got progressively less gorgeous, at times even verging on ugly as the seasons went on. However, since the changing fashion basically corresponded with women becoming less decorative baubles and more active agents, I...can't really miss those beautiful nip-waisted dresses of the first couple seasons.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)The thing I was always worried about with Mad Men, was it getting too cynical. I mean, Mad Men was never exactly idealistic in its outlook; it was full of intensely flawed characters you either disliked or were perpetually on the fence about, or liked but wondered if they deserved to be liked, or were sympathetic to but didn't like. And that was fine with me, because underneath it all there were these extremely subtle undercurrents of...narrative delicacy and consideration. Sure, Mad Men could be pretty cynical, but underneath it all, cynicism wasn't the point. And ultimately the narrative could be profoundly caring, in it's own distanced sort of way. If that makes any sense?
But for shows like that, the pull so often seems to be towards ever greater depths of cynicism, until all those delicate little undercurrents of caring slowly slip away and all that's left is weak, unhappy people making weak, unkind decisions in an existence that seems to offer nothing more.
And I really hate when a show goes that way (even more than I hate when a show goes the way of pablum and fluff), so I ended up stopping with Mad Men at the end of S4, because S4 was so, so excellent, but also so dark that it felt like it was on some kind of cynicism event horizon.
So I guess I'm interested to know whether you think the show became increasingly cynical in its final years, and of it did, how it handled that.
Unless you just completely like, "What the fuck are you talking about?" in which case, hey fair enough. Most people probably don't care as much about cynicism and idealism dynamics in narrative fiction as I do. :P

I think that yes, the cynical undercurrent is there, as it always was and is, and a lot of that has to do with the ongoing Vietnam war, civil rights, women's rights, and the fact that time waits for no man, so the older characters are seeing their positions and their influences shift, the 'game' keeps changing and the children are getting older.
But there are positive, happy things as well, and growth and change....
I don't think it got darker, at all - i *do* think it did a pretty good job of keeping current events, counterculture, all that - a *very* cynical age, to be honest - in proper perspective and proportion.
I don't think you'd hate it or be let down - i think you'd really enjoy the last three seasons, and the ending...oh man. It's delightful. There is also - if you're a Peggy Olsen fan, and I am - a scene with her in the last couple eps involving a painting (you'll know it when you see it) that is so epic it is beyond the pale.
So i say - go forth! Watch! Enjoy! :)
