I'm guessing it's because some people find case fics intimidating to write? I have an idea for a case fic that I'm hoping to write someday, and will do as much research as I can and all that good stuff, but I'd also worry about coming up with a list of suspects that wasn't so obvious from the start, or keeping the case suspenseful and intriguing, or portraying the profiling side of things accurately, and whatnot. Compared to that, writing romance stories seems much easier :p.

I totally get that. I'm just not interested in the other stuff, which is why even though its one of my favorite shows I stay away from fics. I'm really mostly just interested in canon or fics that follow the canon model.

Understandable :). I love reading that stuff, too-I get very happy when I find a story that reads like something I could see happening on the show itself, and captures the characters as we know them on the show. It's rare, but it's wonderful when it does happen.
