Oh man, CM was my first thought too. I have a ship, so gen isn't my first wish, but the writing on most of them! NCIS has it even worse, so maybe it's the kind of show and the type of (novice?) writers it attracts.

And I don't usually mind crossovers because they're often easy to explain away. The same type of show or a shared actor or a fandom that's simply everywhere. But there's this bizarre trend of shipping Reid with a specific X-Men character and I'm pretty sure it's one of the biggest ships for him. Wtf, right?

If anyone has any recs for good fics though...

are you talking about Reid/Gambit? I've been wondering how the fuck that got started as well. It just seems so random. I could understand if it were just a few fics, but there's over 100 of them in their AO3 tag. I support people shipping whatever they want, but it's so...odd.

Yeah, that's it. I'm all for crack/obscure pairings as well, but how long can that really be interesting? I looked up the guy who previously played Gambit (Tatum's up next) and he's handsome, I guess? Like a hunkier Reid actually. So that might be the appeal?

I think it might have something to do with people liking Will but not wanting to break up JJ/Will for Reid/Will, and Remy is the next most accessible Louisiana character they know. Plus it brings in the potential for Spencer to be a mutant. Because Boy Genius with eidetic memory wasn't special enough, you know. :/

Wow, I don't think I've ever come across a Reid/Will fic. Hm. That could be...interesting.

(Personally, I'm a Reid/JJ fan. Though I do like Will, too-I often feel bad for the poor guy, 'cause he always gets dumped on in fics.)

There's that friend of Reid's from school, Ethan-he's not from Louisiana originally, but he does live in New Orleans (or did, at least, at the time of "Jones"). I'm surprised the fanbase for that possible pairing isn't stronger. I wouldn't mind more stories about those two.

The mutant thing makes sense, a lot of people like making their favorites extra special.

But if it's about Will wouldn't it make more sense to introduce an OC that was Will's brother or cousin or BFF from high school or something? And as for not wanting to break up Will/JJ, back in the olden days that would have been a problem, but these days most people 'solve' that with an OT3.

I can't answer for Criminal Minds, but NCIS used to be good. It used to be a not very big fandom, but with a lot of quality to it. But then the fandom got popular, and it attracted fans that were either novices or something and the quality started deteriorating. Then older fans left and it got worse. I don't know how it has been the last few years, as I also got out, but I'm presuming the trends continued.
