Shows That Keep Getting Better

(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think we can all come up with quite a few examples of shows that just kept getting worse with each season (or were quite good for a few seasons and then took an abrupt nosedive in quality), but how about the opposite? What are some shows that, in your opinion, only improved in quality with each passing season?

Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.

Always what I point to when people ask for examples of sophisticated western animation, along with B:TAS and the other shows in the DCAU.

Breaking Bad.

Fargo.

Parks and Rec definitely got a lot better after the first and second seasons and continued to be very enjoyable (I do know some people who would contest that claim for the last season but I personally liked it a lot)

I think Venture Bros definitely falls under this for me as well. It's not like the first season was BAD or anything (there were definitely some very memorable scenes and such) but the following seasons blew it out of the water and I'm loving the most recent season so far. Also, the episode "All this and Gargantua 2" is one of my favorite episodes of anything ever. Every scene of it was just fantastic (especially the return of General Treister. I was wondering if they'd ever bring him back and they did and it was awesome)

I agree with you on the Venture Bros. The characters in season 1 are funny and likeable, but later seasons have even better character interactions and plot.

Avatar: the Last Airbender. It started slow, but it kept on getting better and better. It's a great show.

Fringe. I tell people "just get through the first part of season 1, and then you'll love it.

I also feels Agents of SHIELD gets better and better, but I realize it's not everyone's cup of tea

Yeah, Fringe starts out very case of the week. While there were a few cool ones like the butterfly hallucination death, I didn't really start to get invested until "Ability" and "Bad Dreams".

Better Call Saul, although it's only on its second season so maybe it doesn't count. The Wire maybe.

Ia with you about Better Call Saul (haven't seen The Wire).

Justified and Hannibal.

Definitely agree on Hannibal - season 3 blew my mind. But I think Justified hit its peak with season 2, because nothing beat Mags Bennett as the big bad. It did still keep being awesome until the end though.

I've heard some weren't a massive fan of the Italy arc, but I thought the whole season was pretty much perfection. Bedelia was a big part of why the season was so great too, so I can't regret a moment of it.

because nothing beat Mags Bennett as the big bad

Mags was certainly the most memorable antagonist on Justified after Boyd (and it's true, that season in particular was fantastic), but I don't feel like the show got worse, at least not in any major way. The finale was actually one of my favorite episodes, so I felt like it deserved a mention.

DA

Season three is my favorite too.

I would say season two is the weakest though. The finale blew everyone's minds, but some of the middle episodes are less stellar.

You know, I actually liked season two... A lot. Even the middle episodes. I have trouble saying which season is my least favorite with Hannibal because I love them all in their own way, despite the flaws. (Which were all very forgivable to me.) Then again, maybe I feel this way because S2 deals with Hannibal and Will being more on equal ground, and I dig that part of their relationship the most; it's more interesting to me when Will fights back, and plays Hannibal just as much as Hannibal plays everyone else.

The killer of the week aspect of the show definitely felt a bit tired in S2, but on a whole I'm okay with it.

Parks and Rec, and to some extent the X-Files: I think it started shaky, got better some time around the 4th season, and then, from what I've seen (haven't gotten past season 6 but I've heard a lot), took a pretty big dive.

Re: Shows That Keep Getting Better

(Anonymous) 2016-02-24 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Have to disagree re: X-Files. I think the first season is a fairly strong start, especially with episodes like "Squeeze", "Ice", "Eve", "Beyond the Sea", "Darkness Falls" and "Tooms". Season Two gets even better and delivers fairly solid episodes and a few classics like "The Host" and "Humbug". But season three is where they really kick off with "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose", "War of the Coprophages", "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" and "Quagmire". Not that season four isn't good, it is, but you can't really top "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" and "Jose Chung's From Outer Space".

Season five is solid, and season six is starting to get a little shaky. Season 7 is the last really good season, IMO.
