Are these the same characters just made over or something?

Yeah, it's their designs from the original games (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald) and the remakes (Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire).

Their characters were also expanded upon (or changed, depending on how you interpret it). Basically they just got more dialogue and their top team members got more dialogue IIRC.

Yeah, adding dialogue gave them more character, but didn't take the old version of them away. The only big change is Archie's skin color, which makes me wonder if that's sadly the reason why they cannot ship the ORAS update.

honestly anon, I've been mulling it over and its actually the opposite - it's Maxie's new design that bugs me SO MUCH. its hard to take him as seriously when he looks like a nerd in shorts with tights D:

It didn't feel like the game was PUSHING it as much in ORAS (well, now the card game is, but the game game). ORAS seemed to ship Maxie and Tabitha, so I would imagine it shipped Archie and Shelly in Sapphire then.

But yeah in the original, it was like "oh my god you two just make out already".

I'm with you on this, but for Steven/Wallace instead of Archie/Maxie. Shipped it like burning during RSE, but ORAS really turned me off from it. I think it's because I just plain hate Wallace's new design. It's just so ugly. I know he was always fabulous, but there's a line and I think they've passed it.
