Doesn't mean he wouldn't have been, either. Or, more interestingly, that he wouldn't have tried and failed. I think that's the point OP was making: It's too bad we never got to know.

I think he would have tried to be a good father (and probably not succeeded). It would have added an interesting layer to his character either way. It would also have added more depth to Laurie. I'm siding with the OP here.
