+10000 to all of this.

If the OP were saying it shouldn't be allowed, or that they should be ashamed or something, I would definitely disagree with that. But I think it's pretty understandable to just kind of go, hmmm, about it.

Does judging someone not imply that you think they have something to be ashamed of?

Not really, unless you are the kind of person for whom the only possible meaning of the word "judging" is coming to hard-line negative conclusions.

For me, judging means weighing and considering. It doesn't necessarily mean coming to any conclusions whatsoever, let alone hard line ones or negative ones. Definitive, negative judgment is a type of judgment too, of course. Just not the only type.

Come on, that's pure semantics and you know it. People are putting scare quotes around the word "judgey" in this very thread for a reason.

No, it really isn't. The word "judge" is a word with a lot of versatility and I think it's important to recognize that. "I'm judging you so hard right now," is one thing, and "By my judgement we should be there in an hour" is another, but both are valid uses of the same basic word.

When I say I judge someone for something, it can mean I judge them harshly and have a concrete, negative opinion. Or it can mean that something they do or say merely makes me go, hmmmm. It can imply contempt, but it can also just imply I'm weighing something in my mind. And as you'll note, if you go back to my original comment, in this case I merely go hmmmm. In fact, I didn't even use the word judge myself, because I know how people like to be simplistic about things and jump to their own conclusions about what someone actually means, even when their conclusions are wrong.

You could run a 3-ring circus with mental gymnastics like that.

The people saying they "side-eye" it are at least being honest about what they're doing.
