Google's 'next generation' Atlas robot turns heads

(Anonymous) 2016-02-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Google's robotics arm, Boston Dynamics, has released a video of a new version of its Atlas robot. The video shows the upgraded robot opening doors, picking up boxes and taking an eerily human-like stroll in the woods.

The section with the guy with the hockey stick is going to be played after the robot uprising to justify the subjugation of humanity.

OH great. They taught them to open doors. Now they can escape.

It makes me really uncomfortable when they push them over so callously like that...

I was just watching an ep of NOVA about a contest to develop robots with abilities that could be useful in disasters, like walking over rubble, climbing a ladder, opening a door, and turning a valve. It was pretty impressive.

I just find them so creepy. I think it's the constantly-bent knees? And elbows? They look like, at any moment, they're going to *spring* on you!!!! I dunno. Just...creepy.

I find it incredible that it can process its weight change fast enough to correct to falling through snow, up that little bump, and being shoved with the hockey stick. Last time I saw one of these videos, it could barely calculate fast enough to walk, and fell over after, what, 9 steps?

OK, that's cool.

It was very cool. Kind of adorable, but a fantastic feat of engineering.
