IDK what's wrong with that? People have always liked nostalgia, that's not something millennials came up with.

The implication in the 2nd panel that this grown man is dragging his mom to a movie she doesn't want to see makes me think that the creator of the image doesn't think too highly of adults who like Jurassic Park and other such "childish" things.

I thought it was his girlfriend, are they supposed to be the same woman? Why is he taking his mom? That made it more confusing

That really should be your first clue. There's a 22 year gap between the 2 pictures, and the mom just didn't age...?

It's a really stylized anime-esque art style though. Have you ever watched anime? Anime characters' ages aren't always easy to pin down just by looking at them. 15-year-olds who look like adults and 30-year-olds who look 12 are both regular occurrences.

If the guy is going to appear to age up between panels, I am going to assume that the woman is affected by the same laws of nature. Thus, it cannot be the same woman. I don't care if that's the "style", it's dumb. I have watched anime. You can draw old ladies who look like old ladies.

It's his girlfriend who looks like his mom because he's got some oedipus complex going on. In theme with the manchild aspect, he wants his girlfriend to take care of him in the same way his mom did.

Pretty sure that's like his wife or girlfriend in the second one, or Mom got work done.

Well, in manga-esque art, those twin lines on either sides of the mouth indicate old age. I'd say that's meant to be mom.

Geez, if you're going to go that deep then yes, people can and do shrink with age and maybe she did get work done in that particular department. More likely the artist just isn't very consistent.

Plus, I think the joke makes more sense with the same woman, so there's every reason to think it is.

Personally, I thought the joke was he was a whiny bitch with his mom, and now he's a whiny bitch with his girlfriend.

Maybe she just gained some weight and that's why her breasts appear to be larger. It's not at all uncommon for a person's proportions to shift as they age.

I don't think her breasts are smaller in the first one. It's just that she's wearing some kind of overalls/pinafore thing that obscures the shape of her bust.

I think that's supposed to be an apron, another one of those manga visual cues for "mother". But you're right about the boobs!

...and now we're all officially way too deep down this rabbit hole.

My mom seems to be into all the stuff of her parent's generation, except for the Eagles.
