You know what's worse? When shops list their products but not the prices.

I came here to see if I wanted to buy your stupid thing and to not waste a trip to the store to get it. TELL ME YOUR PRICES.

Even worse? Restaurants that do that. :(

Oh my god, yes that's the worst too.

And there's a lot of them. My bf used to design websites for people like that, and they're completely caught up in the idea it should be an "experience" yadda yadda, while most regular mortals want to know how much money it will cost them.

Yup! It is so annoying trying to choose between restaurants when you don't know how much one will cost you.

That is annoying.

Or when something shows up as out of stock but there is no indication of whether they will ever order more of the thing. Ever.

I appreciate the Ikea website for having a button that satisfies that curiosity without me having to ask a real person.

Yep, that was the only really good thing about renoing the basement. Every single home supply store really had their shit together about pricing, items being in stock, and ordering online if necessary.

It's almost like they're used to dealing with people who need that info for business reasons or something lol.

Those are my favourite people and businesses to deal with.

Fuck, this. What is the point of websites if they're not going to give the necessary information?

Uhhhh... to... increase brand visibility or some other marketing bullshit, I assume.

Yeah, but unless I can find nobody else who provides a similar service, I'd probably click away from them. Then again, I'm one of those unicorns who shops by price first, regardless of fancy marketing.

I don't think that's a unicorn thing, considering us "millenials" are ruining ad campaigns by essentially being immune to advertising. There have been multiple very gripe-y studies about it lol.

Oh, that's interesting! I hadn't heard about it. Huh. Isn't it just a combo of skepticism, too much stuff being sold, and not enough money to toss?

It's also, (un?)fortunately, the fact that we're better educated than the previous generation.

We had media literacy classes in high school (in some cases even elementary school), we're more likely to have a college degree (and as a result, more likely to not watch or own cable television in the first place), and we're more likely to research large purchases rather than rely on celebrity endorsements or information from marketing sources.

We're the internet generation, and as a result nobody has any god damn clue how to advertise to us.

It's true, I wouldn't go anywhere near a large purchase without investigating online first to know exactly what I want.
And you're right about the advertising - even online advertising sucks most of the time, as can be seen from the popups (fuck you, no way I'm looking at you know!) and various noisy and animated obnoxious ads, which just make people download more adblockers.

I guess we should be happy, though? I'm sure somebody will figure it out. Like you have all those social-justicey ads nowadays. Are they more successful?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-02-26 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not a clue about social-justice type ads. I'm sure someone will do a study at some point, but I haven't seen anything yet.
