I get packages shipped all the time, sometimes several times a week, and the answer is... it depends on the company?

Overnight does not necessarily mean overnight processing. It really ONLY means overnight shipping. Some companies process and ship orders the next day regardless of what sort of shipping you get, others take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to process orders before shipping. Generally if it's a company that does a lot of online sales and/or shipped orders they'll list their average/expected processing time somewhere on the website.

Shipping is really fucking expensive, especially overnighting a package. So yeah, it's totally fair to charge $30 for overnighting it, even if that's after a week of processing, b/c the company likely isn't making a dime of that $30 and likely warned you it wouldn't ship the next day anyway. That money is entirely going from you to the postal service so they can ship your box in a day rather than the week or two it'd take for standard post.

Personally if I truly need something the next day, I'll place the order by phone and ask if they can get it out. Most of the companies I order from are very accommodating if it's truly an emergency, but if I don't ask I expect it to take at least 3-5 days before they mail it.
