I'm actually happy that they didn't put this in the film, or portrayed it in that manner. I feel like everything that was in the film was enough. To add in an uncomfortable sexual relationship between Leon and Mathilda would have been too much, which would kind of render it unnecessary.

I actually thought it was done really well, and hit quite deep that Mathilda developed an attraction to Leon and Leon seemed confused about the whole thing. I recall seeing Jean Reno talk about how he wanted to portray Leon as a little slow and child-like so he didn't quite understand that Mathilda had developed romantic feelings for him. And it would make sense that the only adult to have looked after Mathilda so much the way Leon did that he gave her a sexual awakening. Considering Mathilda and Leon saved each other from dark paths, I think to have them actually go as far as to have them have sex would have cheapened that element of the story.

And for kicks, did you know there's a Bollywood version called Bichhoo? The Mathilda character is a college age woman, but she acts really childish in the film (ahh young Rani Mukerji!). And the two leads fall in love. They have a song and dance number. Do what you will with this information I've given you all.
