Boku dake ga Inai Machi/Erased

[personal profile] ill_omened 2016-02-27 01:36 am (UTC)(link)

So I'm only three episodes in but calling it now, this show is going to be a modern classic.

I've not seen an anime that has been this mature, and emotionally complex in years.

The central focus is on a man who gets sent back to his childhood to solve a series of kidnappings. However, whilst that sounds fairly by numbers, it's serves as a reflection to view our childhood through adult eyes and the relationship we have with those in our lives, whilst being entirely true to it's late eighties setting.

Words can't really serve it justice, which is fitting, because so much of what it doesn't state.

Okay. I'm convinced, will try tonight.

what % of the show / its fandom is centered on wanting to fuck the main characters

The initial summary recalls the manga 20th Century Boys. Would you call that a moderately fair comparison, if you know? If so, you have my attention. That story was excellent.

No, it won't. It's not even the best Winter show.

But it's the most popular this season and that's what matters.

I feel you though, waiting on Rakugo to end so I can marathon it in on go.

I agree with the second half of this at least, sadly I suspect more people are watching Erased than actual best show of the season Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju.

I mean, from my limited engagement with anime fandom, I've seen 3000 people on here talking about Rakugo and no one talking about anything else except ill_omened right now, so

You'd think, but f!s has alt taste when it comes to seasonal anime. Erased is by far the break out hit of the season (in the top 10 of MAL for a bit, dunno if it's anymore) and while Rakugo has a following too, yeah, but it's pretty niche in subject matter.

Yuri Kuma Arashi was really popular last winter season here, but not especially other in anime spaces.

follow up question: all the research that I've done is reading the premises quickly and looking at a few screenshots really briefly, but Erased looks way better than Rakugo

why is Rakugo better

this isnt a shipping thing, is it

What do you think nonny?

Brilliant acting and direction, visually stunning, great characters and story. It's mature, measured, subtle.

First episode is a bit disjointed because it was cut down from a longer OVA but the other episodes are perfect.

Rakugo is Mad Men, Erased is Lost (and I think the Lost comparison is especially true because according to a friend of mine who reads the manga the story becomes not as good as it was after the first arc).

Haven't seen it and don't really intend to, but that's a really good way to translate that title. Damn, translation/localization efforts have come a long way since the 90's.

Is this for real or are you joking? I can't tell.

Because if it's the former, no it's not, it's a terrible translation that misses the point hard (the title of the manga/anime is also the title of a short story written by the main girl but thanks to the 'Erased' bullshit the reference is lost.)

Re: Boku dake ga Inai Machi/Erased

(Anonymous) 2016-02-27 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. "Erased" sounds like a shitty American thriller movie and the connotations are completely different. Plus Kayo's Atashi Dake Ga Inai Machi essay was translated as "The Town Without Me" when it popped up in episode 2.

I disagree.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm enjoying the show and all but between the obvious otaku pandering and how predictable it's turning out, I think it only stands out because this has been a rather weak season and in a few months no one will remember it.

I also don't think it's as mature and emotionally complex as you make it sound.

the first three episodes really are fantastic and I totally agree with you on the eighties setting. but I'm not a fan of the modern time set up and I feel like there will be more of that.
