56: I never really understand this concept. I liked a lot of characters growing up that had a lot more self-confidence/were braver than me, and it didn't make me any less of a huge weepy pussy. It's going to take more than a character to change who you are. You've got to do a little legwork too.

Not to deny the catalyst for change comes from within, it certainly does, but not everyone is so self-posessed at age 6. I can remember telling myself to act a certain way because that was how one of my heroes acted and everyone liked her, so if I was like that then people would like me, too. I've since grown out of that mindset, but Nami and characters like her, who don't care what other people think of them and aren't afraid to be smart, or assert their opinions, or be comfortable with their bodies, or be afraid to be single, were something of a wake-up call to me. They were what I'd always wanted to be but were afraid of because I'd grown up with an idea of what girls "should be" from outside sources.
