I dunno, OP. If I felt like I could do a much better job with an idea, I'd just do it. I'd expand it and add my own details and make it my own. But then I think it's silly to act like ideas are sacred. ALL stories, original or fanfic are made up of ideas someone else has had before. No matter how awesome an idea a fic writer has, it's highly unlikely to be an original one.

I think it's the implication that your interpretation would automatically be better. Although there are a few authors in my fandom that I would love to see write a version of one of my stories, they are few and far between. Most of the authors in my fandom are as bad as or worse than me.

Well, there are no guarantees, obviously. But if you're a writer, you can't simply refrain from writing something on the basis that it might not be as good as something that came before. You might as well try.

Depends on how much of someone's idea you are going to steal. Plagiarism is something still to be avoided in my opinion.

Sure. But keep in mind that no author has the monopoly on an idea and arguing that someone stole your fanfic idea is a very shaky foundation.

Oh I agree. But when it's something like a uniqueish idea (they do exist sometimes in fandom) or just a flat out rewrite of the same plot, in those cases I think it's at least polite to seek permission.

Plus it does still seem rude to me. Okay there is a ton of crap fic out there but someone still poured their heart and soul into it. Depending on how specific the plot we're talking about is, the idea that we're entitled to help ourselves to someone's cool concept under the smug assumption that we can do it better is very, very off color imo.
