I hate how people conflate bottoming with delicate uke.

Looking at slim delicate Chris O'Donnell.

To be fair, having the white guy ("Callen," I guess, WTF kind of name is that?) be the "top" would require some sort of active participation on his part, and I don't see anyone actively choosing to have sex with that ugly creature next to him.

And that has nothing to do with the guy being black. He's actually got a fairly light complexion for a black. It's because he's huge, ugly, hulking, bald thing that no one could possibly become aroused by.

nice to see you ugly anon

Aw, ugly anon. We missed you. And not that you care, but Callen is his last name, and LL Cool J is smokin'.

Whatever, ladies love that guy

I was never in their fandom. But for some reason I'm surprised by this! IDK why. 👕 & 👖 dynamics can be weird in fandom. Sorry, anon. Sometimes I think it's all about the porn, nor exploring characters, but that's not a popular opinion, either.

As someone who has never seen the show and has no idea what these character's personalities are...

Sam doesn't seem like he'd be hypermasculine at all. For some reason I get the vibe that he likes baseball but can also make some mean blue berry muffins.

I don't watch the show either and that's pretty much the vibe I got from the picture too. like, they both look like suburban dads who barbecue together on the weekends or something

You're not far offbase at all, and it's definitely racial fetishism that contributes to fandom's opinion of him as a BIG HULKING BLACK MAN in fics. Sam is actually kind of a dork, in a really cute way, and he cares an awful lot about Callen in a way that is blatant and part of the show's very structure. Considering the first time we ever meet these characters is on NCIS (the parent show) and Callen has gotten shot 9 times and Sam is holding him close and sobbing and yelling for help and shit? He's definitely not afraid to show his emotions and put himself out there for friends. He's also a big worrier, and he has kids, so, yeah. :P

The NCIS: New Orleans fandom turned me off the show completely so I get this.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with the NCIS New Orleans fandom? Honest question. I watch the show but it never even occurred to me to check the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The parts that I wander into and I'm not saying this is all, but simply my experience, was completely about over-analyzing every little scene for their non-canon for any and all hints of shipperness, bashing the characters and the people that liked those characters if it interfered with their ship, and ignoring anything about the friendships between the characters because it's their ship or die.

I know if happens in all fandoms to a degree, but with a show like this, it's just not what I watch for. I'd rather discuss the friendships and the characters like I can on the flagship.

Here's what I don't get. If you want to see fics where Callen tops, then why aren't you writing fics where Callen tops? Why are you waiting on everyone else to cater to your preferences?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Because some of us can't write.
Because some of us both write AND read.
Because some of us don't get the same enjoyment reading our own writing as we do reading others.
Because fuck you, that's why.

A wee bit grouchy.

I do apologize for that last one. I was trying to be funny.

To be fair "just write it yourself!!!" responses are really common here. People can still make a secret about being frustrated by a dearth of something.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I've always hated responses like this because I don't personally know any person that can get off to their own fics the way they can to stuff written by other people. If I want to see something in fandom? I generally DO write something, but that doesn't mean if I'm the only one I'm still not going to be a salty motherfucker because I have never gotten off to my own stuff in the same way I can get off to a fic where I don't already know every single word, and I can see the slip-ups ("Ohhh that's the part where I was really frustrated and couldn't find the right sentence structure...urgh...."), and there's just obvious marks of my own work everywhere.

We're allowed to do two things at once anon, and maybe secret!OP DOES write fics where Callen tops the fuck out of Sam, but that doesn't solve the overall problem, which seems to be fandom's general woobification of Callen, which also extends into how bedroom scenes are portrayed.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I can only get off to my own fic.

Sucks to be the rest of you, I guess!

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship Sam/Callen, because Sam seems to love his wife and kids too much for me to be able to split him from them, but I don't understand how fandom could possibly get that characterization of the two of them if they are paying attention to how they act and interact on the show. Sam is always the more soft-spoken and more gentle of the two, while Callen is definitely rougher around the edges and more blunt. Not that those personalities mean that Sam would never top or anything, but I just don't see them as the stereotypes that you say they are portrayed as in fic. Oh fandom. Why am I even surprised any more?

Yeah, if the people in that fandom met my best friend and his husband, they would be super confused (they're both built like LL Cool J). People like to categorize, and fit things into boxes, making someone who is obviously not tiny or meek and putting them on the bottom because the other person is bulkier and therefore 'manlier' is sad.
There is nothing wrong with bottoming. It does not make the person 'weaker' or less of a man. It just means that they like it.

(I brought up my best friend because he's a SEAL, and I will laugh at anyone who tries to tell him he's a woobie because he's versatile with his husband (yes, we are the type of friends who share these details, sue us))
deird1: Spike and Angel looking miffed over Buffy, with text "moving on; no, really" (Spike Angel moving on)

[personal profile] deird1 2016-02-29 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
You have my sympathies.

After eight years of looking, I finally wrote my own Spike/Angel fic in which Spike tops, because I had never ever found one.
