"No thank you. I'm Jewish/Muslim/Atheist/Protestent/Whatever reason you have for not wanting to become a Jehovah's Witness. It's been very nice talking to you, but I would rather we didn't speak about religion anymore."

They are. I'm not even saying that to insult them, part of trying to convert people to any religion is to not look like you're converting them at first.

My reasons for not wanting to join aren't great though. Mostly, the cult stuff like disfellowship is scary. I try to be open to other religions and I'm usually willing to go to open events of other faiths and learn about them.

I'll just have to grow a spine and tell them I don't approve of the disfellowship. It's harder to say no to people when they're being polite, then when they're being pushy and rude. I feel like I've led them on by letting them visit me so much.

Your reasons do not have to be great to be completely reasonable! My favorite advice is 'No is a complete sentence.' You don't have to give reasons if you don't want to. "No, thank you." Is just fine.

You haven't led them on. You've been polite. You owe them nothing just because you let them talk to you.

nayrt

But you don't really need to state your reasons. I mean you can, but it's just as acceptable to say "I'm sorry, I'm just not interested in joining!" or "It just really doesn't sound like my thing!" Be sure to cut off further conversation though by adding some kind of finality, like, "Have a great day though, bye."

Your reasons don't have to be "great". If you don't want to join this religion, then don't. That's all the reason you need. But protip, don't tell them you disapprove of whatever in their religion. You're just opening yourself up to a big long speech about why it's really okay, etc. You're not interested in starting a debate with them, are you? So don't offer your reasons why you're not into it. Telling them thanks but no thanks is plenty.

It is okay to not want to join a cult for the reason that it is a cult.
