Any Kindle Users here

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Can any kindle users advise what the shit justed happened?

I had an "Update" I didn't ask for and now instead of having 70-80 books, I only have 13.

This is not helpful, I know, but I never ever plug my kindle into a computer connected to the internet for exactly this reason. I have no intention of letting Amazon fuck with my downloaded content.

So this is an expected thing? This is something that's know for them to do, and I'd just been less of a noob and a bit more savvy I wouldn't have lost about £30's worth of stuff I bought off them?

Well to be fair it's not lost, I still have the files, I just don't have any way to read them since you can only read stuff purchased for kindle on a kindle.

Fuck this is depressing me so bad right now.

If you still have them saved somewhere else, can you re-upload them to the Kindle?

/never had a kindle probably not being helpful

Er... I'm not a kindle user (for reasons like this) but don't they have a free Kindle app so you can still read Kindle books on other devices?

Eh, I read non-purchased content on my kindle? Or did they block that in recent versions?

Is your stuff maybe just sitting in the cloud (log onto your Kindle account and check Manage My Devices). Everything you purchased from Amazon will still exist in the cloud at least.

If these are personal docs that you emailed to your Kindle email account to get them on your Kindle, they may still be in the cloud, although I'm not as sure about that one. You might have to re-email.

If you're talking about Mobis and EPubs you got from other sources, and if you still have those, you can use Calibre to upload them to your computer. Calibre has a lot of features, including removing DRM, but I just use it to upload different formats to my Kindle, and usually I convert the Mobis and EPubs to AZWs, because they render better on the Kindle.

Just make sure that you have a backup copy of your external files (mobis and epubs), because those things may disappear in an update.

Calibre: https://calibre-ebook.com/

Hope that helps!

I plug it into the computer, but I'm not actually registered (I mostly read fic on it). Also o keep backups of the files.

Please people, anyone have anything to advise?

It's kinda ruining my night.

If it's anything like my version: Backup your stuff. Return to factory default. This will effectively erase everything on it, including your account. Do NOT register the device again (It will ask you, ignore). Turn off the internet option. Put your stuff back on is by USB cable. You'll be able to read your stuff but not download from the Amazon store directly).

(Damn i had the leaflet manual here but can't find it)

I got an email a couple weeks ago about an update that would change the look of the interface, but it doesn't seem to have happened yet, and there's no change in my number of items. I don't have an issue with updates generally, but usually keep my Kindle on airplane mode because the wifi seems to make the battery run down faster. I'd try synching from the device and checking the site under Manage My Content And Devices to see if your purchases are there but showing as undelivered. You may just have to download them to the Kindle again. If not, definitely contact them.

Were any of your missing books samples, by chance? I went from 679 to 558, and I don't see anything missing but possibly the samples I got before the content management thing started listing them, apparently around November 2014. None of my fic or the few books I've bought elsewhere are gone.

I hate the new interface & updates! I can't even visit Wikipedia w/o the application closing.

You can turn it off in the settings.

Are you sure they are gone and not just off of your device? I don't have Kindle, but I use the Kindle app for my phone to read things, and it often will remove things from there such that I have to go back to Amazon and redownload them if I want to read them. They're still mine, but they're not on my device until I put them back for whatever reason.

In my case, I have a lot of mon-Amazon books and stories on my kindle and I thought they were gone, too. But it seems that after the new update, kindle sorts stuff as "in the cloud/amazon books" and "downloaded other books" - try synchronising the kindle or look under a different tag (I use a different language version and don't use the kindle front page, so I'm not sure how to locate it/how it's called. I'm guessing it's "downloads" or something.)

It might be on the "cloud" so you may have to redownload them. Or they were relabeled in the system and you have to find them.

Idk, I can't remember how mine "disappeared" with the new update, but I was like D: and had to look for them and they were still there, just...moved.

Keep in mind, though, that my kindle is new (a paperwhite) and i have all of like...8 books and when I got that update, it made my list go down to like, 3.

this just happened, and it was across the board--all Kindle generations and styles were affected. If you don't do the update, you can't buy books anymore from Amazon through your Kindle--or so people have said. I would advise trying the Amazon Kindle boards, they have some very knowledgeable people.

My Kindle is 3rd gen and hasen't had any post-update problems; all my books are there. But most of the changes can't be applied to 3rd gen or older Kindles.
