Your pediatrician misinformed you. You're not supposed to give camphor products to kids under 6 because it's very poisonous if ingested or if you inhale too much of it and toddlers are small and can't be trusted not to stick things in their mouths. It has nothing to do with allergies.

Steam can be helpful, especially if the Vick's is triggering your asthma, but be careful with the hot showers if you're feeling light headed because the heat can mess with your blood pressure and make you faint.

You want to keep taking the expectorant, or all that gunk is going to wind up doing bad things to your sinuses or your lungs, but look for one that has a cough suppressant included, like Mucinex DM (or generic equivalent thereof).
