Most of the time you can get them to leave you alone and still be very nice about it. You don't have to shut the door in their face or anything, just say you aren't religious/aren't interested.

When we used to get the JWs coming through our neighborhood once a year, I always invited them in and gave them some refreshments. But I also made it very clear that I'm already a devout heathen and not interested in conversion. Mostly they seemed pretty happy to have someone friendly to talk to about theology and religious differences and whatnot. I never had any problems with them being pushy or trying to 'follow up' on visits since I made sure they understood I wasn't a possible convert.
