Your doubt is valid. Most fics that I have encountered where a student character is shipped with one of the adults often sets the fic in the student's sixth year. Sure, not all of them do, but I think fics with younger children have become far rarer over the years, and the one example I can think of is one I encountered on AFF.net.

I think not only do people make sure to write of-age people on the bottom of their age gaps and are very afraid of accidentally making it look like pedophilia (or ephebophilia but I guess most people just lump them together and they're both creepy so yeah) but I also think peoples' kinks are more interested in both people being adults; it fits better with their fantasies and/or their preferred ship dynamics.

That's my guess at least based on what I've seen of this (fairly popular) trope. Personally I don't like age gaps
