What do you do do if you think your outspoken political beliefs are driving those close to you to the opposing side?

I tone it down.

I'd have a hard think about whether or not I was being an obnoxious jerk, even if I meant well by it. But then I'd be unlikely to discuss politics so openly in the first place, particularly with people who weren't likeminded.

A) Accept that some of those people were probably already leaning towards that side, and for the rest:
B) Make absolutely certain that you know the difference between being 'outspoken' and being 'rude and judgmental.'

Determine which I consider more important, being right or helping the cause.

Sometimes it's being right, and the people are lost causes anyway.

Sometimes it's helping the cause, and finding ways to communicate with people who might come around eventually, even if it means stepping off the pedestal of ideological purity.

Being right is a burden. Keep being right and fuck the people who try to change you. Unless you're literally right, in which case you're wrong.

Find a different place to focus your passion - is there a campaign or advocacy group you can volunteer for? That way you're reaching people who are interested in the issue.
