I've probably said this on FS before, but: I think the problem is that it's all from Harry's perspective, so the reader mostly gets two people fighting and Harry occasionally being like "Welp, that's awkward. Anyway, about Voldemort." There's a lot more filling in the blanks required in the books, which I think can be a barrier to entry for a lot of people. (I hated H/R in the books, but I liked it in the movies because the relationship was freed from Harry's perspective.)

That's an interesting take on it! I liked it in the books too, but it had a different feel to it in the movies. And yeah, Harry's definitely gonna be biased and it was even indicated in the books he dreaded them getting together because he was afraid they'd break up and it'd get awkward. (He was right, sort of, but at least while they were broken up/fighting Harry had a lot of other stuff on his mind...) That pretty much summed it up from his viewpoint as you said.
