(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)I do ship Rei/Nagisa pretty hard, too, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 06:45 am (UTC)(link)Absolutely none of them are 'gay as fuck'. Trust me, I wish they were. Treating this anime like it has outright representation when it doesn't though just means show creators will give us more of the same crap.
The only thing this show had was subtext, and for the most part besides a few racy little scenes (Nitori asking Rin whether he likes the 'top or bottom' comes to mind, as does that strip-tease scene where Makoto grabs Haru's opened belt buckle at his crotch so Haru would stop taking off his pants) the show was way, way more tame than I expected after seeing loads of fangirls talk about the show basically exactly like you do. Rin is not 'popping a boner' for anybody at all, throughout the entire course of the show. At the most he's overly emotional around his friends, and acting like you can't be emotional or care about your friends or else it's ~super gaaaay~ is something that drives me insane both about yaoi fangirls in general and about shows that give subtext exactly like that. None of that is unresolved sexual tension (tbh the only characters who I would say had anything remotely resembling romantic or sexual tension throughout the course of the show is the whole Rei/Nagisa thing, Sousuke brooding over Rin...possibly, and Haru's jealousy with Kisumi started feeling a bit like a romantic triangle situation). If anything it's just the characters all being close friends. That's it. That's the canon. Rin is a crybaby, and so he cries and is overemotional. That's not 'popping a boner'. At all.
So step off your fandom high horse (do I need to round up the one from the other day for you?) and stop acting like you're somehow better because you don't agree with the secret OP. I think RinGou is cute personally (although I wouldn't say I actively ship it), and it's just about as plausible as anything else in this show. The fact that the show basically not-so-subtly shames gay people when they think Rei might be dating his track teammate should tell you exactly how much of a chance there is that any couples everyone drools over are actually 'canon'.
Personally I'd love my MakoHaru dream life with doting coach!Makoto and Olympic!Haru and Rei and Nagisa who discover they can't live without one another, but let's be real, with the way Japanese anime is Rin could just as easily get together with his own sister as imagine getting together with another dude.
Also lol nah she does have a bit of a brother complex going on. The fact that you're trying to act like it's totally normal to fangirl over your brother's muscles is making me side-eye you (combined with the fact that apparently fawning over your brother's muscles is okay but Rin being upset and overemotional about his childhood friends? That's totes 'popping a boner'!) I love me some hot dude abs but seeing my own brother shirtless after he got super into weightlifting never did shit for me.
Blerghghh. Thanks for reminding me why I try and stay far, far away from fandom and meta for Free!.
+1 million
(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 08:54 am (UTC)(link)"She fucks her brother!"
"GOD anon what's wrong with you, she does that with everyone it's not like it means she feels anything for her brother!"
Like I understand incest squicks a lot of people out, especially het incest, but anime really, really normalizes "sister/brother complexes" that have a distinctly sexual/physical overtone to them, and Gou did indeed have a small "brother complex" Easy enough to ignore if that's not your deal but I also picked up on it. I don't really ship it (Rin/Nitori is my OTP for Rin, look at me in my sad little dingy of a ship), but I can definitely see why others do.
Also, yeah fans like that are basically why I stay out of fandom for Free! too. This fandom is scary man. I just read my fics and look at my doujinshi and try to pretend that such a sweet slice of life anime doesn't have the most horrible, immature, entitled fanbase ever.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 10:07 am (UTC)(link)you're awfully invested in a show it sounds like you hate
(Anonymous) 2016-03-04 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)They're two sides of the same coin, anon. They're both pure fanservice that will never be canon. (For that matter, nobody in this thread said the gay in the show was representation, so why are you going off at us about that.) The "gay" is for the female viewers and the "brocon" is for the males. Both things are taboo in real life, that's their appeal in shows like Free!. Please be consistent when you criticise.
You have bad reading comprehension
(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:12 am (UTC)(link)They're just trying to point out that the "brother complex" thing is canon for fanservice purposes. The anon that they're originally replying to acted like Gou literally had nothing going on, like the other anon said, acting like it's totally 100% normal to fawn all over your brother's muscles and that this wasn't meant as fanservice of any kind.
It totally was, just like the gay subtext is fanservice. Acting like the gay subtext is TOTALLY INTENTIONAL U GUIZ while simultaneously denying the fact that Gou had a bit of "brocon" going on is fucking biased as hell though.
Also lmfao at "you sound like you hate the show" they sound like they enjoy the show just fine, it's the stupid fans they're not too keen on, and I don't blame them. You're being embarrassing with the "straighty straight straight" shit. Did you like totally skip over where they admit they would have drooled over a big MakoHaru dream ending?
