IMO it is canon it's just not directly depicted on screen

Which is still suboptimal but

It is canon that they were together. We don't see a kiss or anything, but we do know they are sharing a room and Susan says later that she was falling for Talia at the time. I wish it had been more explicit, but it was canon.

Oh, I completely agree. There should have been more. It was just your wording I was taking issue with because they were a canon pairing.

This so completely went over my head at the time. I keep wondering if it was just subtlety on the show's part and naivete on my part, or if the local station that aired it where I lived cut stuff out.

It is Canon. It's just off screen and heavily implied instead of being outright shown. You can thank the 90s for that though.

Totally canon. It just didn't have a happy ending, that's all.

I'm really glad Susan didn't get a new gf/bf five seconds later like some characters do after a bad breakup or their love interest dying...

I watched it long after it aired, and I wasn't spoiled for anything other than having some vague idea that there were lesbians named Ivanova and Talia. Imagine my disappoint.
