That's an interesting headcanon, but your phrasing is kind of ridiculous. You "don't buy" it? If something about a fictional story doesn't make sense to you, it's because of poor writing, not because all the characters are lying about it.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
All the characters? I only remember hearing it from Aang's words, not the narrative, so a naïve having been lied to by his caretakers is not that far fetcheded in my opinion.

This feels like a repeat. Or a matrix cat situation

14 is kind of a repeat? I'm not sure the rules on someone copy-pasting a FS comment into a secret

It was from a "Fandom Secrets you don't have time to make right now" thread. Looks like someone finally found time for making it later. I don't see why it would be against the rules?

I could actually get on board with parts of this, it's an interesting idea.

I would wonder how easily the lady Air Nomads would have hidden their pregnancies, but maybe they just chose that nine month period to be ~nomadic~ or something.

I like your headcanon and think it more interesting than canon too, but I'm kind of baffled how you can look at a show like ATLA and THAT is what you have trouble swallowing. There are at least a dozen less plausible things about that show than the idea of airbending being an exclusively dominant trait in members of the Air clan.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It is baffling that we hear them called Air Nomads, but we only ever see them hiding in a couple monasteries and never moving. I can only resolve this by assuming there was a large population of Air Nomads we didn't see on the show, who were wandering around, doing their own thing, and as OP suggests, occasionally knocking up the locals.

I thought the temples were sort of refuges for them/places they returned to, not necessarily places they lived for a long time? idk

NAYRT
I thought their children were raised for years in one of the Temple and only moved out of it when they got into their preteens. Maybe it makes sense for child rearing, but what about their caretakers? that was quite a long time for adults to be sedentary.

What OP seems to be confused about is that they had vows of Celibacy. Was never mentioned in the show, and consider the actions of the ones we know: Aang had no problem taking a wife and having lots of kids. And his Son who he raised as a traditional airbender had no problem taking a wife and having lots of kids. And now that there's a bunch of others Tenzin has never told them all to stop banging, he just wants them to shave their heads.

While the genetics contributing to Airbenders is plausible, I think there's quite a few out there for a reason. Also word of god is geography is part of the component so it's likely Air Bastards had a far lower or even zero chance of being born Airbenders as much because of where they were born as anything. We know genetics isn't a sole determiner

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well of course Tenzin has never told his recruits to stop banging, how would that fly in a kids show?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I think it was mostly an assumption about celibacy by the fandom, since it WAS kind of shown/implied that the Northern and Southern Air Temples were for men and the East/West temples were for women.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine they probably did a lot of journeying all over the place. Every Air Nomad has a flying bison companion, and Aang mentions having had friends in all Four Nations, which makes me think they did quite a lot of travelling.

The "hiding in monasteries" thing could have been because Sozin and the Fire Nation were becoming more threatening, and the Air Nomads expected the four temples to be hard to reach, so they went there for safety?

I think YOU personally will like Embers. she had a convoluted theory as to why they where nomads.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Embers is a shitty fic that spends 100% of the time fellatiating an OC that the author claims is Zuko, but who lacks literally all of the traits that made Zuko likable while making sure to make everyone else as unlikable as possible by making shit up and claiming that it's only "logical".

Fuck Embers.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
My theory was similar - the Air Nomads kept the children who were air benders and gave away the ones who weren't. However, eventually this hidden genetic bank saved them because the descendants of those non-benders became the new air benders, like Aang's son Bumi.

You're like a hair above the people who try and make tortured theories about how Rugrats is a fever dream of Angelica and Snow White is about heroin addiction. Maybe half a hair.
