I think this would depend a lot on how people define respect and what giving someone respect entails.

Agreed.

I mean I think there's a level of basic human respect that everyone should give people.

There's a difference between being highly respectful of someone and their opinions and basic human decency.

Honestly if someone thinks people have to earn the right to any respect from them, I hope for everyone else's sake that they stay away from that person.

It differs by culture and relationship too. Respect for your parents is different from respect for a boss or respect for a random person who is younger than you which is different from respect for a person of the same age or older, etc etc
