BOOK CLUB is happening! - PLEASE READ

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-03-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
This is the last thread for book club that will be in GC!! After this one, they will be in their old spot, in their own thread below Games.

So far we have six recs for books to read in April! They are:

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier
Softwares by Rudy Rucker
Ceres Blooms at Night by Shani Mootoo
Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary K. Wolf
Morte by Robert Repino
Bad Magic by Evelyn Elliot

This is your last chance to rec books for April! The poll will go up Monday. Any rec I receive before Monday afternoon will go on. You MUST include both the title AND the author. I will ask for clarification but if you post at the last minute on Monday without both pieces of info, or don't respond to my request for clarification if you don't include both, it's not going on.

The poll will probably be open through Friday. I'd like to keep them open for about a week in general but since things are starting late this month I'd like to close it quickly. You can start the book whenever you want, once it's chosen, but we will have a discussion for it around the last day of April (exact day to be determined but will be announced). Also, before the end of April, I will start taking recs for May so that poll can go up as soon as possible after April begins.

Again: the poll WILL NOT be in GC; it will be in the book club thread below the games thread!

:)

Can you remove Roger Rabbit? It's not like the film at all. Jessica Rabbit is raped for a start, and the plot never acknowledges it. Infact the plot focuses more on how she lied about another rape. It's fucking gross and I'd like you to not encourage people to read it.

Sorry, I cannot refuse to include a book that someone else recced. If I did that for any reason it would set a bad precedent and it wouldn't be fair.

And I shouldn't have to point out that I am not encouraging anyone to read anything, I'm literally c/ping the recs that other people have posted.

Well can you at least advise people to not choose it?

DA- But maybe content warnings would help? At least to stop people who are susceptible to trauma triggers getting them sprung them?

Maybe we should go back to requiring some additional info - basic synopsis and any relevant triggers - being included in recs. It does kinda feel like pulling teeth, though...

I'll include a warning in the poll post that this book has triggery content.

I will not publicly support or denounce any rec on the list, no. People can make their own informed decisions.

How about Rosemary Sutcliff's "The Lantern Bearers"? It's a tale of the last days of Roman Britain at the beginning of the Saxon invasion. It gets kind of dark pretty quick and a lot of emotionally heavy/complex stuff happens, but it is SO SO GOOD and really pulls you into the emotional life of the protagonist. Also there is a lot of interesting stuff about culture clash and the general history of the era.

Hey! I have another rec: Red Rising by Pierce Brown. It's the first of a trilogy that a lot of people I know have been reading recently and it sounds like solid sci-fi goodness :D
