I believe there's respect and then there is decency. Respect is earned but you should give decency to everyone.

Even if you feel they haven't "earned" your respect, people don't deserve to be treated shittily right off the bat when they never did anything to you.

This is close to the way I feel about it.

Courtesy (or decency, if you prefer--I tend to think they're allied concepts but not the same exact thing) is the outward expression of respect. Everybody deserves courtesy unless they have done something really horrific to forfeit it.

Respect is earned, although I tend to feel that people like parents and teachers should receive it by default unless they do something to forfeit it.
