Question for farmers or people who know about chickens

So this isn't at all about Batman but the thread says important questions and this has been really bugging me.

I know a few people who own farms and have chickens, and two have mentioned how they have to be quick about collecting the eggs so they won't turn into chickens.

I've always been under the impression that the eggs we eat are UNFERTILIZED. How exactly is waiting longer before you collect them going to magically make them fertilized?

Is there something I'm missing or are the people who've said this just complete morons?

Chickens lay eggs no matter what. If there's a rooster around to fuck the chickens, the eggs will be fertilized. If not, not. The ones we eat are mostly not fertilized because there aren't any roosters fucking them. Presumably your friends keep roosters.

That's what I've always heard, and it's why I'm so confused that apparently time can make unfertilized eggs magically become fertilized after being laid, or at least that's what these people are acting like.

That's what I'm talking about. The people are like "oh, better hurry up and get them (to eat) before they turn into chickens!" If they're unfertilized, how is waiting longer before getting them going to make them magically fertilized if they weren't already?

I'm assuming their eggs are, in fact, just fertilized eggs from beginning to end. Or at least some of them are.

So getting them sooner magically makes them not fertilized anymore? Or do they like abort them by putting them in the refrigerator like the person below mentioned and then eat the dead fetus or whatever? I'm sorry if I sound like a complete idiot or something but this sounds completely different than what I've always thought.

Um, I would assume they mean that they want to remove the fertilized eggs from the brooding hen so she won't sit on them till they hatch. Because eggs need to be incubated in order to hatch -- in order for the embryo to develop even. So no, we won't be eating the dead fetus unless it's balut.

I would assume those people have roosters, so you want to grab the eggs and put them in the fridge quick smart. This halts any fetus development

Fun fact, if they are fertile and your fridge not too cold you can still hatch them later.


However. If they do not have any roosters, then they are morons.

Ok, now I'm really lost.

I thought it was like...if the female chicken has sex with the male chicken, then the eggs they lay afterwards are fertilized, and they develop into baby chickens.

If they don't have sex before laying the eggs then they aren't fertilized and can't become fertilized after being laid, right?

So...you're saying that an egg can be fertilized but putting it in the fridge keeps the chicken fetus from developing? Like a chicken abortion or something?

Why would someone put it in the fridge unless they planned to eat it? And does that mean that some of the eggs we eat ARE fertilized so the people who say you're eating aborted chicken fetuses when you eat eggs are actually right?

I'm so confused.

- Yes you are correct!

- Yup! Depending on how cold your fridge is you are either "aborting" the egg or, if fridge is kinda cool, putting it on "hold"

Why would someone put it in the fridge unless they planned to eat it?

- Sometimes you change your mind, sometimes you get a broody chick so give it a chance, sometimes you don't want chickens yet so you put them in the fridge to hold it off for a bit (no more than a week, as it is risky and may abort them)

And does that mean that some of the eggs we eat ARE fertilized so the people who say you're eating aborted chicken fetuses when you eat eggs are actually right?

- Probably not your major stores, but your local farmer's eggs you have a good chance of making the joke with accuracy, yes.

Big commercial farms only have hens, so no, most supermarket eggs aren't fertilized. If your friends have roosters, some of their chickens' eggs could be fertile. If your friends eat the fertilized eggs the day they're laid, there's probably not much difference between fertile eggs and unfertile.
