Example:
Person A says something condescending about another person. = respect lost
Person B does stands up for someone. = respect gained.
So what I consider proper respect is gained over time through action, experience, and being in relation to that person. General respect is more courteousness (i.e. you're not just going to be rude to the person walking down the street beside you).
