When a young woman was 'visiting a relative' for a while (ie nine months) it was usually so she could discreetly have a child out of wedlock and then give it up for adoption and then return home to nosy neighbours being non-the-wiser.

My Mum's family usually adopted them into another part of the family - like the unwed mother's older married sister adopting the child.
