I stopped watching in season 7, but I didn't think it was a particularly bad season on its own. The problem was how it wrapped up Season 6's plot line in a very clumsy manner. Part of why I loved the show was how tightly-plotted the first five seasons were: everything flowed naturally from one season to the next into a coherent story that had clearly been building since the first episodes. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt in season six because the show clearly hadn't been planned out that far, but then in season seven they made it clear that the last season had officially gone nowhere and this one was looking to go the same way

I think this explains it quite well for me, too.

That was Sera Gamble's biggest failing, I think. She had nowhere she wanted Sam and Dean to go as characters, and therefor nowhere for the show to go.
