(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 01:52 am (UTC)(link)When my mom died of cancer, there was a feeling in the air and some braver people even said it: maybe it's for the best. She'd been suffering for ages and she wasn't going to get any better. She was still pretty young and she had wanted to see me and my brother graduate, and we'd have liked her to be there, but at what cost? I've known people who are weird about it, as if I wanted her to die. Obviously not. But I also didn't want to see her in pain anymore.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)I'm so sorry you went through that. And I agree with you that sometimes death could be better. I have several elderly relatives who have explicitly said that they're ready to die, given their current quality of life, although none is both comfortable with and physically capable of suicide.
No matter how old you are, if you're going to suffer without hope of improvement...like you say, it depends on the exact situation, but it is possible for death to feel like a mercy.
